Battlefords Dental Centre receives several frequently asked questions about dental health. From kids to adults, we are available to answer all your questions and hope the answers below address some of yours.

When should I take my child in for their first dental appointment?

We recommend taking them in for their first dental exam and cleaning six months after their first tooth erupts through their gums. Our experienced team knows how to work with very young children to make them feel comfortable and keep them calm throughout the appointment.

I heard it doesn’t matter too much if my child gets cavities in their baby teeth because they’re going to fall out anyway. Is this true?

This is definitely not true. Even if the tooth is a baby tooth that will “fall out anyway”, a cavity and tooth decay can cause damage to the gums, which can become permanent and affect the bone and the permanent teeth underneath the gums. In addition, if a child doesn’t learn good dental hygiene at a young age, they will likely continue their bad habits as a teen and adult which will lead to the decay and damage of their permanent teeth.

How safe are x-rays?

Dentistry advancements have significantly lowered the radiation levels emitted by dental x-rays. Modern machines can target smaller area, and high speed film results in shorter exposures. Full body, lead lined aprons are still occasionally used, but this is no longer necessary in most cases, including at our dental clinic.

What are dental sealants and should my child get them?

Dental sealants are a thin, plastic coating painted on the chewing surfaces of the premolars and molars to prevent decay. It bonds to the depressions and grooves of the teeth, forming a protective shield over the enamel of each tooth. While sealants are not required, it is a good idea for children ages 6-14 to add protection against decay.

Are at-home tooth whitening kits affective?

While at home treatments are easy to apply and do lightening your teeth, they are nowhere near as effective as a professional teeth whitening done at the dentist office. Professional teeth whitening can make your teeth three to eight shades lighter. We use light activated whitening techniques that are easier on the enamel than peroxide-based toothpastes.
